African Safari, Lions P1. P2. P3. P4.

These lion cubs played around us for hours. Pouncing on anything that moved, their parents got a little bit annoyed at times and whacked them with the back of their paws if they got to be too much of a nuisance.

The little one continually stalked his mothers tail and if she dared to use it to ward off a fly, he immediately grabbed at it.

There were half a dozen cubs and seven females. The adult females spent most of their time dozing, sometimes on their bellies, sometimes on their backs.

Of course, if they were on their backs, they exposed what could most politely be described as a multi point feeding station for babies. And the babies were neither slow nor fussy where they went.

If the first female pushed them away, they would try several more until they got what they were after. The very youngest, and bravest cub tried his luck with one female who pushed him away repeatedly. But he kept trying, until she turned and snarled very menacingly at him. He snarled back and tried again. She went back to sleep and just let him get on with his late breakfast.

All the cubs were very actively watching what was going on. It was clear when one lion cub knew he was being stalked by another cub. The potential victim would continue as if nothing was wrong, but always moved towards a tree so that when the mock attack came, it could only come from one side.

And when it came, they would lock arms and roll around for a few moments before lying down and licking each other over.
